June 17, 2025 (Minnesota) — Fair and Just Prosecution (FJP) laments and condemns the targeted, politically-motivated violence that claimed the lives of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband and left Senator John Hoffman and his wife in critical condition on Saturday. At this inflection point in American history, we all share the responsibility – in word and deed – of uniting against targeted violence. 

FJP Executive Director Aramis Ayala Released the Following Statement in Response to the Tragic Shootings:

“The highest calling of any society is ensuring the safety of its citizens, including its elected officials. FJP grieves and condemns the targeted violence that resulted in the deaths of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband and which left Senator John Hoffman and his wife in critical condition. Our condolences are with the family of Representative Hortman, and we pray for the recovery of Senator Hoffman and his wife.

Targeted violence against people who chose to serve their communities through public office threatens not just those individuals, but the legitimacy of public service and our collective commitment to public safety. We are grateful that the man responsible for this immediate tragedy has been apprehended, but our commitment to opposing politically-motivated violence must not rest or subside.

No matter our political affiliation, the state we live in, our race, gender, or religion we all share a responsibility to nurture our civil society by cultivating compassion, understanding, and respect for every person’s inherent dignity and value, without regard to our disagreements or differences. Targeted violence undermines our common life together and strains the fabric of our society. At this inflection point, we must all condemn such violence unequivocally, and commit ourselves – in both word and deed – to concern for the rights and safety of all members of our society.”
