Jared Owens is a New York–based multidisciplinary artist whose practice focuses on bringing awareness to the plight of nearly 2.5 million people who are enmeshed in the U.S. carceral state. He is self-taught during more than eighteen years of incarceration, working in painting, sculpture, and installation, using materials and references culled from penal matter.
Artist’s Statement
The piece depicts Satana Deberry in her work space, surrounded by books. I used her quotes because to me they are powerful affirmations of her intent as a district attorney attempting to make positive change in the justice system.
